E-Commerce Average Order Value – 2026 E-commerce Benchmarks

Where Does AOV Stand in 2026?

Average Order Value (AOV) measures the average dollars spent per transaction, and it’s one of the fastest health checks you can run on an ecommerce business. As of April 2026, the cross-industry global average sits at $172, based on Dynamic Yield benchmark data covering the trailing twelve months.

That’s a solid step up from the roughly $144 we tracked in 2024. Some of the climb is real gains in merchandising, bundling, and subscription revenue. Some of it is price inflation working its way through catalogs. Either way, the direction has held for five straight years now.

One caution before you measure yourself against any of these figures: different trackers watch different sets of merchants. Dynamic Yield’s panel leans toward mid-market and enterprise retailers, so its global average runs higher than platform-level numbers from Shopify or WooCommerce. Pick one source and track against it consistently instead of mixing them.

Where You Sell Changes What You Earn Per Order

Your selling channel sets the ceiling before you optimize a single thing. Here’s how the major platforms compare on the most recent data available:

PlatformAverage Order ValueContext
Branded DTC sites$120–$150+Full control over upsell and bundle placement
WooCommerce$105Weighted average across 65M+ orders (Metorik, 2026)
Shopify (all stores)$85Top 20% clear $192; top 10% clear $311 (Littledata)
Walmart.com$68Marketplace basket behavior
Target.com$63Mixed grocery and general merchandise
Amazon$52US marketplace, high frequency and low basket
eBay$45Dominated by single-item purchases

Takeaway: merchants selling on their own storefronts typically pull 2x to 3x the AOV of marketplace sellers. Marketplaces trade basket size for volume and reach, which is a fine trade as long as your margin math works at $52 a pop.

The Industry Hierarchy

What you sell explains more of your AOV than anything else you control. Here’s the 2026 vertical picture from Dynamic Yield, averaged across January through April:

Industry2026 Average AOV
Luxury & Jewelry$364
Consumer Goods$331
Home & Furniture$294
Fashion & Apparel$281
Multi-Brand Retail$116
Food & Beverage$89
Beauty & Personal Care$87
Pet Care & Veterinary$61

Two movements worth flagging. Consumer Goods spiked to $418 in April, a 28% jump from March. And Fashion & Apparel nearly doubled between October 2025 ($151) and April 2026 ($289), the sharpest sustained climb anywhere in the set.

6xspread
Worth knowing

That’s the distance between the highest and lowest verticals. A $90 AOV in beauty is strong performance. That same number in furniture is a problem.

Why Is Desktop Still Out-Earning Mobile?

Mobile now drives the clear majority of orders, but it still loses badly on basket size:

  • Desktop: $218
  • Mobile: $159
  • Tablet: $154

Desktop pulls a 37% premium over mobile. The divide widens as you move down-market, too. Metorik’s WooCommerce data puts desktop at $167 against mobile at $71, even though mobile accounts for 72% of order volume on those stores.

The reason is behavioral. Desktop shoppers browse longer, compare more, and build multi-item carts. Mobile shoppers buy the one thing they came for and leave. Closing some of that distance is probably the single largest revenue opportunity most merchants are sitting on right now.

Region Tells a Different Story Than It Used To

For years the Americas led on order value. Not anymore:

  • EMEA: $193
  • Americas: $158
  • APAC: $125

EMEA now runs $35 ahead of the Americas and $68 ahead of APAC. Currency movement explains part of it, but so does category mix. European merchant panels lean harder into furniture, luxury, and premium fashion.

UK-specific numbers back this up. IRP Commerce clocked an average of £127.06 across its merchant base in June 2026, up 2.31% year over year.

B2B, DTC, and Marketplaces Aren’t Playing the Same Game

B2B ecommerce

Order values in the hundreds to thousands of dollars are routine here, and the ceiling keeps rising. 39% of B2B buyers now say they’d place a single self-service order above $500,000, up from 28% in 2022, per McKinsey’s B2B Pulse. One in five would go past $1 million without picking up a phone. Forrester expects more than half of B2B transactions at or above $1M to run through digital self-serve.

Direct-to-consumer

Expect $60 to $150 depending on category, with fashion DTC frequently landing at the top of that band and consumables at the bottom. You own the checkout, so you own the upsell.

Marketplaces

Structurally lower, because marketplace shoppers buy one item and go. Amazon’s $52 reflects the model working exactly as designed, not a merchandising failure.

4.9xCVR divide
The tradeoff

Merchants under $60 AOV convert at a 4.63% median. Those above $200 convert at 0.95%, per Elogic’s 2026 study of 21 B2B stores. Chasing a bigger basket has a cost, so price it in.

Five Years of AOV Growth

  • 2020: down roughly 13% as pandemic buying fragmented into small, frequent orders
  • 2022: up about 10% to $116.70
  • 2023: up 9.75% to $122.80
  • 2024: up 8.70% to roughly $144
  • Late 2025: $150 to $154, a slower 3.08% year-over-year climb
  • April 2026: $172 on the trailing twelve-month measure

The shape of that curve is growth with fading momentum through 2025, then a re-acceleration into 2026.

What Should You Expect for the Rest of 2026?

Four things are pushing order values up: AI product recommendations moving from pilot project to default across mid-market storefronts, subscription programs lifting basket sizes (Recharge reports subscription merchants running 11.2% higher AOV year over year), free shipping thresholds getting tuned instead of guessed, and shoppers consolidating purchases to cut delivery frequency.

Three things are pushing back: mobile’s rising share of orders drags the blended average down, value-conscious shoppers keep trading down within categories, and marketplace growth pulls volume toward lower-basket channels.

Net of all that, expect the global average to land somewhere between $175 and $190 by year end.

How Do You Lift Your AOV?

Free shipping thresholds do the heaviest lifting for the least work. 58% of shoppers report adding items to qualify. Set your threshold at roughly 1.3x current AOV. Go much higher and shoppers abandon instead of adding.

Bundles and kits typically add 20% to 35%, with the better implementations reaching 55%. Sell the combination at a visible discount against buying the pieces separately, and show the math on the page.

Product recommendations powered by behavioral data add 20% to 25% on typical Shopify deployments, and recommendation surfaces drive close to 31% of site revenue for merchants who lean on them.

Repeat buyers spend roughly 67% more per order than first-timers, which makes retention work AOV work. Metorik’s numbers show the same effect at platform level: returning WooCommerce customers average $108 against $99 for new ones.

For mobile, cut friction rather than adding upsells. One-tap wallets, carts that persist across devices, and a progress bar toward the free shipping threshold all beat an aggressive post-add-to-cart modal.

Benchmarks to Track

Use these as your 2026 yardstick:

  • Global cross-industry AOV: $172
  • Your vertical’s average, from the table above
  • Desktop-to-mobile spread: 37% is typical, anything wider is fixable
  • Free shipping threshold: 1.3x your current AOV
  • Repeat customer premium: aim for 10% or better over new customers
  • Bundle attach rate and the AOV lift it produces, measured monthly

Track the trend on your own numbers before you worry about the global figure. A merchant moving from $78 to $91 is winning, whatever the cross-industry average happens to say.
