eCommerce Conversion Rate Formula - Simplified & Advanced

Conversion rate is the link between traffic and revenue. While the simplest way to calculate it gives you a quick snapshot, a deeper dive into your funnel can reveal exactly where opportunities (and leaks) lie.

1. Basic Conversion Rate Formula

At its most straightforward, conversion rate answers one question: “Of all the people who visited my site, how many completed the action I care about?” You can use this for any action—newsletter sign‑ups, cart adds or purchases.

Formula:

Total Conversions refers to every time your chosen action happened (e.g., a sale). Total Site Visits counts all sessions in the same period. If you sold 50 items from 2,000 visits, your conversion rate is (50 ÷ 2,000) × 100 = 2.5 %.

This “visit‑based” calculation has become the industry standard because it’s easy to track in tools like Google Analytics or Shopify Analytics. It’s also the starting point for benchmarking: if your store averages 1 % but your top competitor is at 3 %, you know there’s room to optimize.

2. Advanced Conversion Rate Formula

Raw percentages don't tell the full story. What if you could see exactly which stage of the buying journey costs you the most customers? That’s where an advanced formula, one that multiplies through each key funnel step. Our calculator is based on this approach.

Formula:

  • Visits→Product Page: the percentage of visitors who view any product.
  • Product Page→Add to Cart: how many of those go on to add something to cart.
  • Add to Cart→Checkout: the share of carts that reach your checkout page.
  • Checkout→Purchase: the final conversion at payment.

Imagine each stage as a filter. If 80 % of visitors view a product, 10 % of those add to cart, 50 % of carts hit checkout, and 75 % of checkouts finish the purchase, your advanced CR is:

(0.80×0.10×0.50×0.75)×100=3%(0.80 \times 0.10 \times 0.50 \times 0.75) \times 100 = 3\%(0.80×0.10×0.50×0.75)×100=3%
