Shipping to the US from Jamaica: Average Costs and Transit Times

Shipping to the US from Jamaica is easier to plan when you know the package size, delivery deadline, destination, and type of goods before choosing a service. Accurate shipment details and complete recipient information can also help reduce delays during transit and customs clearance. The right option will depend on whether you are sending a personal parcel, a commercial order, or goods that need additional handling.

Jamaican shipments to the US can include clothing, coffee, packaged food, crafts, cosmetics, and other locally produced goods. Jamaica Post resumed outbound Parcels and Packets containing merchandise to the United States on June 1, 2026, while express couriers remain another option for shipments that need faster delivery or more detailed tracking. Certain products, including food, plants, and other regulated goods, can require additional checks or documentation before dispatch.

How to Choose the Best Shipping Carrier to the US from Jamaica

Match the service to the parcel and delivery deadline.

Start with the product type, packed weight, dimensions, shipment value, US ZIP Code, tracking needs, and required arrival date. FedEx lists international package services up to 68 kg, while Jamaica Post handles overseas parcels and packets subject to its current acceptance and customs rules.

Use Jamaica Post when its prepaid-duty process fits.

Jamaica Post resumed US-bound parcels and packets in June 2026 and expanded merchandise acceptance to 55 post offices effective July 1. Merchandise below US$800 requires Zonos duty prepayment and a separate Declaration ID for each package before mailing.

Choose an express courier when the delivery window is shorter.

FedEx lists International Priority and Priority Express at generally 1–3 business days, while International Economy is listed at 4–6 business days. Miami uses Zone B for these services, while other US destinations use Zone A in the 2026 Jamaica rate guide.

Check CBERA and CBTPA eligibility before quoting duties.

Jamaica is currently a beneficiary under both the Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA) and Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act (CBTPA), with CBTPA scheduled through September 30, 2030. Preferential treatment applies only to eligible originating merchandise, so check the applicable HTSUS provision and origin requirements before quoting duty.

Common Customs Delays and How to Avoid Them

Most Jamaica-to-US customs problems begin with incomplete shipment data, missing Jamaican export records, or products that need separate regulatory clearance.

  • Missing Jamaica Post Declaration ID – US-bound postal merchandise below US$800 requires prepaid duties through Zonos, and each package needs its own Declaration ID. Jamaica Post states that packages without a valid ID will not be accepted for mailing.
  • Incorrect classification or product origin – Since July 24, 2026, Jamaica Post’s US duty calculations take the item’s classification and country of origin into account. Use the actual manufacturing origin and the correct tariff classification rather than treating Jamaica as the origin simply because the parcel was mailed there.
  • Incomplete Jamaican export filing – Commercial exporters use JSWIFT for applicable permits and ASYCUDA World for the Export Declaration, with the commercial invoice and required approvals uploaded before submission. A missing declaration or regulatory document can stop the export before the carrier receives it.
  • Missing agricultural permits – JACRA regulates coffee, cocoa, coconut, ginger, nutmeg, pimento, and turmeric and requires licensing for commercial export activities involving regulated commodities. Plant products can also require phytosanitary certification through Jamaica’s Plant Quarantine Division.
  • Food without FDA Prior Notice – Covered food entering the US requires FDA Prior Notice unless an exemption applies, and food arriving by international mail requires filing before the parcel is sent. New international-mail service-name and tracking-number fields took effect October 1, 2026, although FDA does not expect those two fields until May 1, 2027.

Shipping Costs & Transit Times to the US from Jamaica

FedEx’s 2026 Jamaica guide places Miami in Zone B and other US destinations in Zone A for International Economy, International Priority, and International Priority Express. International First also uses Zone A for both Miami and the rest of the United States.

Carrier Service Average Cost Estimated Transit Time
FedEx International Economy, 0.5 kg, other packaging From USD 57.10 to Miami; USD 65.00 to other US destinations By 8 p.m. on the second business day to many US locations
FedEx International Priority, 0.5 kg, other packaging From USD 63.70 to Miami; USD 73.10 to other US destinations By 12 p.m. on the next business day to many US locations
FedEx International Priority Express, 0.5 kg, other packaging From USD 70.10 to Miami; USD 80.40 to other US destinations By the end of the next business day to many US locations
FedEx International First, 0.5 kg, other packaging From USD 98.10 As early as 8 a.m. on the next business day to many US locations

Practical Note: These are FedEx’s published 2026 standard list rates for a 0.5 kg shipment using other packaging. Final charges and delivery commitments depend on the actual origin and destination, billed weight, dimensions, service availability, fuel and other surcharges, additional handling or packaging fees, and applicable duties and taxes. Jamaica Post provides an online postage calculator; confirm its current US postage at the time of mailing.

Who Pays Duties & Taxes

Decide how import charges will be handled before dispatch so the Jamaican sender and US recipient know which party will receive the customs bill.

  • Delivered Duty Paid (DDP): Under DDP, the seller takes responsibility for destination customs clearance and applicable import duties under the agreed Incoterm. Courier billing and importer arrangements should match those sales terms.
  • Delivered At Place (DAP) / recipient-paid: Under DAP, the seller transports the goods to the named destination while the US buyer handles import clearance and applicable destination duties.

Postal Reality Check: Jamaica Post uses its own prepaid-duty procedure for US-bound merchandise below US$800. The sender enters the shipment data in Zonos, pays the calculated duties, receives a Declaration ID, and presents that ID when mailing each package; duties now reflect factors including classification and country of origin.

De Minimis Threshold

The former Section 321 administrative de minimis exemption for ordinary merchandise valued at USD 800 or less remains suspended in 2026. Low shipment value alone no longer makes a Jamaica-to-US commercial order duty-free.

  • Courier and other non-postal shipments: Merchandise entering through FedEx, UPS, or another non-postal channel needs an appropriate US customs entry. Informal entry is normally available for qualifying merchandise valued below USD 2,500, although quota goods, antidumping or countervailing duty merchandise, and certain regulated products use different procedures.
  • International postal shipments: CBP’s new postal informal-entry process covers qualifying mailed merchandise valued at USD 2,500 or less and replaced the former de minimis mail process. The new rules took effect in stages during June and July 2026.
  • Certain postal categories: The compliance date for formal-entry rules covering specified Partner Government Agency, Chapter 98, Chapter 99, and Free Trade Agreement mail shipments has been extended to January 20, 2027. CBP’s Entry Type 13 test began September 22, 2026 as an optional electronic route for eligible shipments.
  • CBERA and CBTPA are separate from de minimis: Qualifying Jamaica-origin merchandise can still receive applicable Caribbean preference-program treatment even though the $800 administrative exemption is suspended. Jamaica remains a beneficiary under both programs in 2026.

Practical Note: Jamaica Post’s requirement to prepay duties on merchandise below US$800 does not mean the old $800 exemption still exists. The amount now depends on the item, origin, tariff classification, value, and other US customs rules.

How to Ship to the US from Jamaica

inventory management expertise 3 pl

Jamaica’s process combines its JSWIFT and ASYCUDA export systems with a separate postal-duty procedure for qualifying US-bound mail.

1. Choose a Jamaica-to-US service that accepts the shipment.

For postal merchandise, confirm a participating Jamaica Post location and current postage; otherwise compare FedEx or UPS using packed weight, value, and US ZIP Code.

2. Complete Jamaica’s commercial export filing.

Commercial exporters use JSWIFT for required permits and ASYCUDA World for the Export Declaration; JAMPRO exporter registration has not been required since October 1, 2023.

3. Obtain product-specific Jamaican approvals.

Secure JACRA licensing for regulated agricultural commodities and obtain Plant Quarantine, veterinary, Trade Board, or other approvals when the product requires them

4. Prepare the US customs and origin records.

Prepare the invoice, value, origin, and 10-digit HTSUS code, then retain Trade Board origin records when claiming CBERA or CBTPA treatment.

5. Complete postal duty payment and dispatch.

For Jamaica Post parcels under US$800, prepay duties through Zonos, obtain a Declaration ID for each package, dispatch, track, and answer clearance requests.

Required Shipping Documents to the US from Jamaica

The exact records depend on the product, carrier, Jamaican export procedure, shipment value, and US customs treatment.

  • Shipping label or air waybill with the Jamaican sender, US consignee, routing, selected service, and tracking information.
  • Commercial invoice with specific product descriptions, quantities, transaction values, currency, buyer and seller information, and country of origin. Jamaica Customs lists the commercial invoice as a mandatory upload for commercial exports.
  • Export Declaration / E-SAD through ASYCUDA World for applicable commercial exports. Jamaica Customs instructs exporters to prepare the declaration electronically and upload required supporting documents before submission.
  • JSWIFT licences, permits, or certificates when the merchandise falls under a Jamaican Border Regulatory Agency requirement. Exporters without such requirements can proceed directly to ASYCUDA.
  • Packing list with carton count, merchandise quantities, contents, and weights when requested by the carrier, broker, buyer, or customs authority.
  • Proof of value such as a sales invoice, receipt, order record, or payment confirmation when US customs requests evidence behind the declared amount.
  • HS and 10-digit HTSUS classifications used to identify the merchandise and determine the applicable US tariff treatment.
  • Jamaica Post customs declaration data for postal merchandise, together with the sender’s identification, TRN, consignee details, and unsealed parcel for counter inspection where required.
  • Zonos Declaration ID for Jamaica Post merchandise below US$800 destined for the United States. Every package needs its own ID before Jamaica Post accepts it.
  • Certificate of Origin when claiming an applicable preferential program. Jamaica Trade Board processes certificate applications through JSWIFT and reviews them against the relevant rules of origin.
  • JACRA licence or commodity records for commercial exports involving regulated coffee, cocoa, coconut, ginger, nutmeg, pimento, or turmeric. JACRA lists an exemption for imports or exports of 5 kg or less used for personal purposes, gifts, or samples.
  • Phytosanitary or veterinary documentation for applicable plants, agricultural products, animals, or animal-origin goods. Jamaica’s Trade Portal lists dedicated export-certification procedures for these categories.
  • FDA Prior Notice for covered food entering the United States. For food arriving through international mail, Prior Notice must be filed before mailing and the confirmation number must accompany the parcel.

Shipping to the US from Jamaica is easier to price once the packed weight, actual product origin, HTSUS classification, Jamaican export requirements, US entry method, duty payer, and eligibility for CBERA or CBTPA treatment have been checked. For postal merchandise, confirm Jamaica Post’s current US shipping requirements and applicable Zonos duty-prepayment process before dispatch.

For Jamaican businesses importing inventory into the United States and then shipping domestic customer orders, Speed Commerce can handle the US fulfillment stage after the goods clear import procedures.

Q: Will Jamaica Post ship packages to the United States in 2026?

A: Yes. Jamaica Post resumed outbound parcels and packets containing merchandise to the United States on June 1, 2026 and expanded the number of accepting post offices from 40 to 55 locations effective July 1. Merchandise below US$800 uses the Zonos prepaid-duty process before mailing.

Q: Do I have to pay US duties before mailing a parcel through Jamaica Post?

A: For merchandise below US$800, Jamaica Post currently requires the sender to prepay duties through the approved Zonos Prepay process. Each package needs its own Declaration ID, and Jamaica Post states that a merchandise package without a valid ID will not be accepted.

Q: Can I ship Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee to the US?

A: Commercial coffee exports can move to the US when Jamaican licensing and US food-import rules are met. JACRA regulates coffee exporters and trademark use, while covered food imports require FDA Prior Notice; JACRA lists an exemption for shipments of 5 kg or less used for personal purposes, gifts, or samples.

Q: Do Jamaican products qualify for duty-free entry under the Caribbean Basin Initiative?

A: Some do. Jamaica is a current CBERA and CBTPA beneficiary, but preference depends on the product’s tariff eligibility and applicable rules of origin rather than the fact that the parcel was mailed from Jamaica; CBTPA is currently scheduled through September 30, 2030.

Q: What export paperwork does a Jamaican business need for a US-bound shipment?

A: Commercial exporters generally use a commercial invoice, ASYCUDA World Export Declaration, product classification, and any licences or certificates required through JSWIFT. Additional records can include a Certificate of Origin, JACRA licence, phytosanitary certificate, packing list, or FDA Prior Notice depending on the merchandise.
