How to Calculate Cubic Feet (Without the Calculator)
The basic formula for calculating cubic feet is:
Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Height (ft)
This formula works perfectly if all your measurements are already in feet. But what if you have measurements in other units? Here's how to handle that:
Converting Other Units to Feet:
- Inches: Divide the measurement in inches by 12. (Example: 24 inches / 12 = 2 feet)
- Yards: Multiply the measurement in yards by 3. (Example: 5 yards * 3 = 15 feet)
- Centimeters: Divide the measurement in centimeters by 30.48. (Example: 91.44 cm / 30.48 = 3 feet)
- Meters: Multiply the measurement in meters by 3.281. (Example: 2 meters * 3.281 = 6.562 feet)
- Milimeters: Divide the measurement by 304.8
Once you've converted all your dimensions to feet, use the formula above (Length × Width × Height) to get the volume in cubic feet.
Example:
Let's say you have a box with the following dimensions:
- Length: 48 inches
- Width: 24 inches
- Height: 18 inches
Step 1: Convert to Feet
- Length: 48 inches / 12 = 4 feet
- Width: 24 inches / 12 = 2 feet
- Height: 18 inches / 12 = 1.5 feet
Step 2: Calculate Volume
- Volume = 4 ft × 2 ft × 1.5 ft = 12 cubic feet
