How to Calculate Dimensional Weight in kg and lbs
Carriers compare your package’s actual weight with the weight implied by the space it takes up, then charge whichever number is higher. Where people get tripped up is not kg versus lbs. It’s the divisor. Change the divisor, and the billed weight changes even if the box does not. Use our DIM weight calculator, updated for 2026.
The Basic Formulas

FedEx and DHL currently publish 139 for inches-to-pounds and 5,000 for centimeters-to-kilograms. UPS uses the same inches formula, but the divisor depends on the rate type: 139 for Daily Rates and 166 for Retail Rates.
Why KG and LBS Don’t Always Change The Rule
Shippers assume that switching from pounds to kilograms means they are working with a different pricing model. Usually, they’re not. A divisor of 139 cubic inches per pound works out to about 5,022 cubic centimeters per kilogram, which is very close to 5,000.
In other words, 139 and 5,000 are basically the same density rule written in two unit systems. A divisor of 166 works out to about 5,997 cubic centimeters per kilogram, so that is a different rule and it produces a lower dimensional weight for the same carton.
Quick example
Take a carton that measures 20 × 16 × 12 inches. Using a 139 divisor, the dimensional weight is 27.63 lb, which rounds to 28 lb under published carrier rounding rules.
Convert that same box to metric dimensions, 50.8 × 40.64 × 30.48 cm, and divide by 5,000, and you get 12.59 kg, which rounds to 13 kg where the carrier rounds to whole kilograms. Same box, same density rule, different unit system.
Run that same carton through a 166 divisor instead, and the dim weight drops to 23.13 lb, or 24 lb once rounded.
USPS Handles DIM A Little Differently
USPS adds a wrinkle. For Priority Mail retail parcels addressed to Zones 1 through 9, dimensional weight applies when the parcel exceeds 1 cubic foot, or 1,728 cubic inches. USPS then divides by 166, rounds up, and charges the greater of actual or dimensional weight. For nonrectangular parcels, USPS first multiplies cubic volume by 0.785 before dividing by 166. So there is no single universal DIM formula that covers every carrier and service.
Implications In Practice
If you’re calculating DIM in pounds, start with inches and confirm whether your divisor is 139 or 166. If you are calculating DIM in kilograms, start with centimeters and check whether your carrier uses 5,000. Then compare that number with the actual weight in the same unit and apply the carrier’s rounding rule.
FedEx’s own guidance also notes that billable dimensional weight may still be converted to pounds for rating purposes, which is another reason warehouse teams shouldn’t assume the input unit is always the final billing unit.
