Shipping to the US from Barbados: Average Costs and Transit Times
Shipping to the US from Barbados is easier to manage when you prepare the package details before booking a service. Packed weight, dimensions, delivery speed, destination ZIP Code, and the type of goods all affect which shipping option makes the most sense. Clear product descriptions, accurate values, origin information, and complete recipient details can also help reduce customs delays.
For Barbados shippers, service availability is an important part of planning because ordinary Barbados Postal Service mail containing merchandise to the United States remains suspended. US-bound packages can instead move through options such as the Barbados Postal Service co-branded DHL Express Courier Service or commercial couriers such as FedEx. Qualifying Barbados-origin goods can also receive preferential US tariff treatment under Caribbean trade programs, so exporters should check whether their products meet the applicable origin requirements before shipping.
How to Choose the Best Shipping Carrier to the US from Barbados
Check the current postal channel before mailing merchandise
Barbados Postal Service has resumed US-bound letters and documents, but ordinary parcels, small packets, EMS goods, and other merchandise remain suspended until further notice. The restriction does not cover the co-branded DHL/BPS Express courier route, which continues to accept packages for the United States.
Consider the BPS/DHL courier route for packages
BPS currently runs its co-branded DHL Express Courier Service from the General Post Office in Bridgetown, and each shipment needs a completed DHL Shipment Waybill. The service uses DHL’s international network, but obtains a current package quote because BPS does not publish a fixed 2026 US merchandise tariff on the page.
Choose FedEx when you need published delivery targets and rates
FedEx lists International Priority Express and International Priority at generally 1–3 business days, while International Economy is listed at 4–6 business days. Its 2026 Barbados guide accepts documents and packages up to 150 lb (68 kg), subject to service coverage, product restrictions, dimensional weight, and surcharges.
Check CBI preference before quoting US duties
Barbados is a beneficiary under both CBERA and CBTPA, and qualifying goods can receive preferential US customs treatment when the applicable origin rules are met. Barbados is not among the economies named in the 2026 forced-labor Section 301 investigations, so that country-level 10% or 12.5% tariff action does not apply to Barbados-origin goods.
More Value. Better Service. No Speed Bumps Ahead.
Get StartedCommon Customs Delays and How to Avoid Them
Barbados-to-US shipments can slow down when the shipping channel is incorrect, export records conflict with US entry data, or preferential-origin claims lack supporting records.
- Using ordinary BPS parcel post for US merchandise – Barbados Postal Service still suspends ordinary mail containing goods to the United States. Use the currently accepted BPS/DHL courier route or another commercial carrier rather than presenting an ordinary parcel, small packet, or EMS merchandise shipment.
- Vague product descriptions – Terms such as “gift,” “clothing,” “crafts,” “parts,” or “samples” can leave too little information for tariff classification. State the exact product, material or use, quantity, value, country of manufacture, and appropriate HS or HTSUS code.
- Incorrect Barbados-origin claims – Shipping a product from Barbados does not automatically make it eligible for CBERA treatment. Under the general CBERA rule, eligible merchandise must meet direct-import and origin requirements, including the applicable 35% beneficiary-country material and processing-cost test unless another specific rule governs the product.
- Missing Barbados export filings or permits – Commercial exports generally use an export Single Administrative Document (SAD) through ASYCUDA World, and restricted merchandise needs the applicable export licence or approval before export. Plant and plant-product shipments can also need phytosanitary inspection and related records.
- Food without US Prior Notice – Covered food entering the United States requires U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Prior Notice unless an exemption applies. For international mail, Prior Notice must be confirmed before mailing; the new mail-service-name and tracking-number fields took effect October 1, 2026, but FDA will not expect those two fields until May 1, 2027.
Shipping Costs & Transit Times to the US from Barbados
FedEx’s 2026 Barbados guide places the United States except Miami in Zone A and Miami in Zone B for International Priority Express, International Priority, and International Economy. The figures below are published 2026 list-rate baselines effective January 5, 2026 rather than final landed prices.
| Carrier | Service | Average Cost | Estimated Transit Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx | International Economy, 1 lb, other packaging | From USD 70.10 to Miami; USD 89.40 to other US destinations | Generally 4–6 business days |
| FedEx | International Economy, 2 lb, other packaging | From USD 75.40 to Miami; USD 95.50 to other US destinations | Generally 4–6 business days |
| FedEx | International Priority, 1 lb, other packaging | From USD 81.70 to Miami; USD 108.90 to other US destinations | Generally 1–3 business days |
| FedEx | International Priority Express, 1 lb, other packaging | From USD 86.60 to Miami; USD 115.40 to other US destinations | Generally 1–3 business days |
Practical Note: These figures exclude fuel, dimensional-weight adjustments, clearance fees, duties, taxes, and other applicable charges. FedEx adjusts its international fuel surcharge weekly and increases its US inbound processing fee in August 2026, so price the packed shipment using the current surcharge schedule before confirming the customer’s total.
Who Pays Duties & Taxes
Set the customs payer before dispatch so the Barbados seller and US customer know who will be billed for import charges.
- Delivered Duty Paid (DDP): Under DDP, the seller handles import clearance and pays applicable destination duties under Incoterms 2020. FedEx also lets the shipping customer designate the shipper, recipient, or a third party as the duty-and-tax payer.
- Delivered At Place (DAP) / recipient-paid: Under DAP, the buyer handles import clearance and pays destination tariffs, while the seller remains responsible for transportation to the named destination. FedEx defaults the recipient as the duty-and-tax payer when no responsible party is selected on the shipping label.
Postal Reality Check: The current Barbados Postal Service restriction means ordinary BPS merchandise is not entering the US postal network from Barbados at this time. The BPS/DHL route operates as a courier channel and should not be confused with ordinary UPU parcel post.
De Minimis Threshold
The former Section 321 administrative de minimis exemption for ordinary merchandise valued at USD 800 or less remains suspended in 2026. Low shipment value alone no longer gives a Barbados-to-US commercial parcel duty-free entry.
- Courier and other non-postal shipments: Merchandise formerly using the $800 exemption now needs another appropriate US customs entry. Entry Type 11 is the general informal entry type for qualifying merchandise valued at USD 2,500 or less, although product-specific rules can require another entry type.
- International postal shipments: CBP’s Entry Type 13 test covers qualifying international-mail merchandise valued at USD 2,500 or less and began September 22, 2026. Barbados’ ordinary US goods mail is currently suspended, but these rules matter if that postal merchandise route resumes.
- Certain regulated or trade-remedy mail: CBP has extended the compliance date for specified international-mail categories under 19 CFR 145.12(a)(2)(v) and (vi) to January 20, 2027.
- Bona fide gifts: A separate US exemption remains for qualifying person-to-person gifts worth no more than USD 100, subject to gift rules and product restrictions. Commercial orders and company merchandise do not become gifts merely because the shipping documents use that description.
- CBERA and CBTPA treatment: Suspension of the $800 de minimis exemption does not erase CBI preferences. Qualifying Barbados-origin merchandise can still receive the applicable CBERA or CBTPA treatment when its tariff provision and origin rules are satisfied.
Practical Note: Treat “under $800” as a shipment value, not a duty-free promise. Check the product’s 10-digit HTSUS classification, actual manufacturing origin, customs value, CBERA or CBTPA eligibility, and entry type before quoting landed cost.
How to Ship to the US from Barbados
Barbados’ current process requires an extra check at the carrier-selection stage because ordinary BPS goods mail to the United States remains suspended.
1. Choose a Barbados-to-US service that accepts merchandise.
Use BPS/DHL or a commercial courier for merchandise because ordinary BPS parcels, small packets, and EMS goods to the US remain suspended.
2. Complete the Barbados export declaration when required.
For commercial exports, file the export SAD through ASYCUDA World when required and give the assessed declaration to the carrier agent.
3. Obtain product permits and origin certification.
Secure required licences or phytosanitary records, and obtain Export Barbados CBI origin certification when claiming US preferential treatment.
4. Prepare the US customs data.
List the exact description, value, country of manufacture, 10-digit HTSUS code, consignee details, and CBERA or CBTPA origin basis before carrier handoff.
5. Dispatch and respond to clearance requests.
Track the shipment and keep the invoice, export SAD, origin records, permits, proof of value, and US importer details ready for customs requests.
Required Shipping Documents to the US from Barbados
The records depend on the product, shipment value, Barbados export procedure, carrier, and US customs entry.
- Shipping label or air waybill showing the Barbados sender, US consignee, service, routing, and tracking information.
- DHL Shipment Waybill when using the co-branded DHL/BPS Express Courier Service from the General Post Office in Bridgetown.
- Commercial invoice with detailed merchandise descriptions, quantities, transaction values, currency, buyer and seller information, and actual country of manufacture. FedEx identifies the Commercial Invoice as the main international customs document for commodity shipments.
- Packing list showing packages, contents, quantities, and weights when requested by the carrier, buyer, broker, or customs authority.
- Export Single Administrative Document (SAD) when Barbados Customs requires a commercial export declaration. The exporter completes the export SAD, submits the assessed SAD to the carrier agent, and Customs verifies it against the waybill before export release in ASYCUDA.
- Customs Reference Number (CRN) for applicable electronically filed declarations. Since July 24, 2026, Barbados Customs no longer requires printed release orders or copies of records already lodged electronically through ASYCUDA World for cargo clearance.
- HS or HTSUS classification identifying each product for US customs treatment and any preference claim.
- Proof of value such as a sales invoice, receipt, order confirmation, or payment record when customs asks for evidence behind the declared amount.
- Certificate of Origin / CBI certification when claiming applicable preferential treatment. Export Barbados certifies exports under the Caribbean Basin Initiative and states that new-product exporters should seek origin certification to determine qualification for duty concessions.
- Phytosanitary documentation for applicable plants and plant products. Barbados’ Ministry of Agriculture currently accepts online applications for phytosanitary inspection of export consignments.
- US importer or consignee information requested by the courier, broker, or CBP for the selected entry.
- US agency documentation such as FDA Prior Notice for covered food or records required by USDA, FDA, or another regulator for the merchandise involved.
Shipping to the US from Barbados is easier to price after the merchant confirms the active carrier channel, packed measurements, manufacturing origin, US tariff classification, CBI eligibility, and Barbados export filing. Ordinary BPS goods mail remains suspended, but the BPS/DHL courier route and FedEx give Barbados businesses current alternatives for US-bound merchandise.
For Barbados brands importing inventory into the United States and then shipping domestic customer orders, Speed Commerce can handle the US fulfillment stage after customs release.
Q: Is Barbados Postal Service accepting packages with goods for the United States?
A: Not through ordinary UPU postal channels as of October 23, 2026. Barbados Postal Service’s latest official US-service notice says letters and documents have resumed, but parcels, small packets, EMS merchandise, and other mail containing goods remain suspended until further notice.
Q: Can I still send a package to the US through the Barbados Post Office?
A: Yes, through the co-branded DHL/BPS Express Courier Service at the General Post Office in Bridgetown. BPS states that the route accepts documents and packages to the United States, and each shipment needs a completed DHL Shipment Waybill.
Q: Can Barbados-made products enter the US duty-free?
A: Some can. Barbados is a CBERA and CBTPA beneficiary, but the merchandise must fall within an eligible tariff provision and meet the applicable origin rule; under the general CBERA rule, qualifying goods are imported directly and ordinarily need at least 35% qualifying beneficiary-country material and direct processing value.
Q: Is Barbados subject to the new 2026 forced-labor Section 301 country tariff?
A: No. Barbados is not among the 60 economies named in USTR’s 2026 forced-labor Section 301 investigations, so the resulting country-level 10% or 12.5% additional-duty action does not apply to Barbados-origin products. Product-specific US tariffs and trade remedies can still apply separately.
Q: How quickly can FedEx ship from Barbados to the United States?
A: FedEx lists International Priority and International Priority Express at generally 1–3 business days, including next-business-day targets to many US locations. International Economy is listed at 4–6 business days, with second-business-day delivery targets to many US locations.
